A reliable computer provides a lifeline

A reliable computer that enables daily life management tasks is crucial to Fiona’s independence.

  • Physical disability

Situation

Fiona has multiple sclerosis and lives on her own. Without functional use of her arms, Fiona depends on her computer for many daily tasks. She operates her computer independently through voice control as well as a specialised mouse controlled by her mouth and sip and puff activation.

Fiona uses her computer to coordinate her support team and NDIS supports, shop online, send emails and run a small online business. She describes her computer as a lifeline and crucial to her independence, enabling many life management tasks.

Fiona's existing computer was becoming more unreliable, often crashing during use. Unable to replace the computer herself, Fiona was anxious about the possibility of it stopping working altogether. A referral was made to Stretchy Tech to assist with recommendations for a new computer that would support her technology and accessibility needs, and to explore funding options.

Solution

The Stretchy Tech occupational therapist (OT) met with Fiona to gather information about her computer needs. Unfortunately, this type of support is not funded under the NDIS, so the OT investigated grant opportunities and assisted with an application for a $2500 grant from a local grant-making trust.

The Stretchy Tech technician made recommendations for a computer with the appropriate specifications to meet Fiona’s needs and to run her essential software. A quote, which included the essential work of transferring her existing data from her old device, was submitted with the grant application.

Outcome

Fiona’s grant application was successful, and her old computer took its last breath the same week that she received funding for a new computer.

Stretchy Tech assisted with the set-up of Fiona’s new computer and transfer of data from her old computer. She now has a reliable device which she uses for numerous daily tasks, allowing her to retain independence.

Importantly, this story illustrates that replacement of an existing technology solution can be just as important as creating a brand-new technology solution. Without this smooth transfer to a new device, Fiona’s situation would have become greatly compromised.

Was there anything that didn’t go to plan? How was this overcome?

There were difficulties accessing Fiona’s Microsoft account which required some additional time to resolve. Once resolved, the computer was able to be set up.

Summary pointers for OTs, technicians, and the intended user (person with disability)

  1. This type of support is not funded by the NDIS so alternative funding avenues such as grants will need to be explored.
  2. To save time during the installation is would be useful for the intended user to have their microsoft account details, WiFi details and any other relevant info ready.
