What is Gemini for Home?

Gemini for Home is Google’s new, more conversational AI for smart homes. Instead of having to say “Hey Google” for every request, you’ll be able to start a chat and have a natural back-and-forth conversation. Early access begins in October 2025 (starting in the US), with a staged rollout across other regions, including Australia.

Google has said there will be both free and paid versions. Reports suggest a new “Google Home Premium” subscription may include Gemini-powered features, similar to how the current Nest Aware subscription works.

What will it do?

Gemini brings some significant upgrades:

More natural conversations: It understands follow-up questions and flexible phrasing, making it easier to give instructions without having to remember exact wording.
“Words to automations”: You’ll be able to describe a routine (like “open the blinds a bit, then set a timer when I start cooking”) and Google will create the automation for you.
Smarter camera summaries: AI can provide daily summaries of your camera footage, such as noting deliveries or visitors. These features may be linked to subscription plans.
Device updates: Existing Nest speakers and displays should automatically receive the upgrade as the rollout continues.

Easier, more flexible conversations will lower the cognitive load for people with communication, memory, or executive-function challenges.
Setting up routines will be faster, with less need for rigid training on exact phrases.
Gemini may suggest new automations that increase independence and make daily life simpler.
AI summaries of camera footage could save time for clients and supports.

The challenges:

If subscription models change, costs and features could shift. This may affect how some NDIS plans cover smart home technology, as subscription services are often not supported by the NDIS.
Some current Google Assistant features or third-party integrations may not work smoothly during the transition.
People who are used to interacting with Google Assistant in a certain way may need a short adjustment period.

Privacy and consent

As with current Google devices, privacy settings will remain important. AI features such as camera summaries are expected to involve cloud processing, so Stretchy Tech will continue to work with clients to review and confirm consent around data use.

What do you need to do?

For now, nothing. The change to Gemini for Home will happen automatically over time, with no downloads or manual updates required. Rollout begins in October 2025, but it may take longer to reach Australia.

Android 10 or later on Android devices
